Zines
Are there any worthwhile paper grindcore zines still being made?
Webzines just aren't the same.

Fast For Speed Freaks from Japan.

Yeah, I know it seems more and more rare these days to get actual print zines. Mostly here in the US now, with the economy and businesses downsizing, many of my favorite record stores and book stores have all closed down. Distribution has slimmed down even much more. Fucking lame.

RE: Zines
All of the independent record stores in Plymouth (UK) have closed down. All we have now is Zavvi (ex-Virgin Megastore) and HMV. And Starbucks.

RE: Zines
We have Walmart, Target, Starbucks, McDonald's, and a bunch of other large corporate megastores here in the East Bay, Ca. Rasputin's closed just a few months ago, Tower closed some years back (who had some the widest selection of zines and mags), The Warehouse closed even more years back, and all the smaller mom and pop shops disappeared a long ass time ago.
There are still some in San Francisco, Berkeley, San Jose, Oakland and some smaller cities. The only thing is that I would have to drive a substantial amount just to get some records, and may have ones I already own, or not carry smaller independent or international labels.

RE: Zines
There used to be a cool second-hand record shop here, that sold CDs and vinyl, and everything was reduced in price by £1 each week. eBay meant it stopped doing business, which was annoying, because you could pick up some cool stuff there cheaply. Now it's turning into a clothes shop. Nowhere sells vinyl anymore.

RE: Zines
Not another clothes shop. Give me vinyl!
There seems to be alot of vacant retail stores around where I live, some have been empty ever since the previous business closed. Most likely due to the owners jacking up the rent, and no other business really being able to afford. So the owners lose out in the end, because the empty space is not making a profit. This happened not only with some of the record stores, but also a wide variety of others, including video rental places I use to regularly haunt.
Seems like most everything underground is mainly through online mailorder these days, which kind of sucks.

RE: Zines
Indeed. The building of a shopping centre in Plymouth killed off a lot of independent shops. In the main city centre, there are now a lot of vacant stores, and a lot who seem to have a different small business in every month.
I used to like going into the second-hand record shop and the independent metal store here in Plymouth, just spend a while looking through their stock, choosing something to buy. It's not the same with online mailorder. Online, I would never buy something I hadn't heard, but in a second-hand record shop, if it's really cheap and suitably obscure, who cares?!?!? The more the merrier!

RE: Zines
down here, in bridgend, we did have a few independent record shops like the jungle and stuff, but they've all closed down. the nearest indie store near me is cardiff, which is too far. the jungle was awsum, if there was anything you wanted on vinyl or anything, they'd hunt it down for you.
