Incantation - "The Infernal Storm"

(Relapse Records / Moria Records Brazil / 2000 also released as PLP on Morbid Records)

Sometime around '93, I bought Onward to Golgotha in a used tape store. Muddy production, 'blasphemous' lyrics, undecipherable guitars, vocals, logo, EVERYTHING. Typical boring death metal. I took a few listens and let it rot. Seven years later, I download "Incantation-TheInfernalStorm-SempiternalPandemondium.mp3" for kicks and
find myself HOOKED. I don't know who changed, them or me, but I can't get enough of this new shit. The riffs are top notch, well played and layed down inside interesting, inventive song structures. And the songs are further helped by a full, natural sound, that gets all the instruments ringing out clear and true (unlike most bands, these guys could set up kit in your garage and sound like the cd. Can the Dimmu Borgirs of the world say that? I don't think so). Granted, this style has been done to death, but shit, Incantation invented it and if anyone has earned the right to keep churning it out, it's them. And rarely do the impersonators come close to this.
